Context: Backdrop of N. Korea Cases

The totalitarian regime in North Korea has longstanding roots stemming from the involvement of ideological different international factions, including the United States.  Even after the direct conflict of the Korean war ended, a dynasty of oppressive rulers in North Korea has left the country isolated, wary of foreigners, and militarily imposing.  The North Korean regimes have long been criticised for human rights abuses against both their own people as well as foreigners.

Since the detainment of Euna Lee and Laura Ling in 2009,  7 American’s have been detained by North Korea, including the longest held prisoner in recent history, Kenneth Bae.
